The piece deals with the subject of love and mortality and the perils of an ill-chosen lover.
It is also intended as a study of not just human fragility but that of a way of thinking – symbolised by the overly romanticised version of life immortalised, or indeed created by the thoroughly modern pre-raphaelites, which has all but disappeared from contemporary representations today.
As such a romanticised time immortalised in pre-raphaelite imagery was doubtful even to have existed, the piece is intended as a playful comment on the modern condition and the extinction of past ideals.
